What it costs to finish a series

The sum is short enough to do on your fingers: count the paid episodes, multiply by the token price, and ignore the free openers, because they add nothing to the bill.

The arithmetic, once and for all

Every series in this notebook follows one formula. Take the total number of episodes, subtract the free ones, and multiply what remains by the price per paid episode. In our eight series, the first two episodes are always free and each later one lists at 12 tokens, so the formula reduces to a single habit: episodes minus two, times twelve.

The calculator above does the same work for the part you have left. Tell it where you have stopped and it counts only the episodes still ahead. If you have watched up to episode 4 of a six episode series, for example, two remain, and 2 x 12 gives you 24 tokens to go.

The three totals

Our eight series fall into three groups, and the only variable is length.

  • 36 tokens: five episodes, three paid. Six series sit here, including My Wife's Dance Instructor and Under the Chief.
  • 48 tokens: six episodes, four paid. Kiss My Enemy stands alone at this level.
  • 60 tokens: seven episodes, five paid. Isabella's Revelation is the only title here.

Each step up is exactly one more episode and exactly 12 more tokens, so a 60 token series is not priced differently from a 36 token one. It simply goes on for longer, and the bill reflects that with no premium on top.

What the totals leave out

These are list prices. A promotion can lower them for a while, so the figure on your screen may be kinder than ours, and you should check the current price before unlocking anything. We have also said nothing about what a token costs you in money, since that belongs on another page. For that side of the question, go to how tokens are counted.

The totals also do not say whether a series deserves finishing. Our ledger records structure and price, not merit, and two series with the same bill may give you very different evenings. Treat the total as a ceiling you are free to stop short of. Sampling costs nothing, and paying one rung at a time means your largest possible regret on any given decision is 12 tokens at list price.
